FREE Sickle Cell Trait testing at select blood drives!
What is Sickle Cell Trait (Hemoglobin S)? Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to all the cells of your body. Hemoglobin S (Hgb S) is an abnormal type of hemoglobin. You inherit the genes for Hgb S from your parents. If a person inherits one normal hemoglobin gene and one Hgb S gene, the person is said to have the sickle cell trait. If the person inherits a Hgb S gene from each parent, the person has sickle cell disease.
Just because a person tests positive for sickle cell trait (SCT – Hemoglobin S), does not mean you have Sickle Cell Disease. Understanding SCT can help you make better decisions for your health, and your family’s.
